"Masochistic
performance after Hans Christian Andersen"
A. Popnedeleva's performance consists of
several parts. Video projection presents the process of picking nettles with
your bare hands and consequences of this . A place in the gallery author weaves
last sleeve.
Trere is an obvious analogy is with Andersen's fairy tale
" Eliza and wild swans ." It talking about the girl who sacrificially
assumes the role of savior of his brothers converted by the evil stepmother in
swans .She must weave 11 shirts from nettle not saying a word. When she was
accused of witchcraft , the girl is ready to accept her assigned fate , but not
to speak.
In performance Adelina Popnedeleva superimposes several layers of meaning .On one side is the story,
known from the popular tale of Andersen. On the other, the identification of the author with the character
and the materialization of the fairytale image is real modern woman , brings autobiographical moment.
The historical aspect stirs certain associations that are interwoven with new " date " reading .
According Adelina Popnedeleva's own
words main focus is connected with the idea of sacrifice and accepted silent
vow, viewed as a synonym of normal female behavior. "In the fairy tale I
am caring
feminine side, the position of Eliza that
accepts suffering, accepts misunderstanding, accusation sand silence. For me it
is a metaphor of love. Love is not a pleasure and delight. Love, devoid of
brilliant, spectacular, beautiful gestures, but close to the real and trivial
sacrifices we make for love us. ''
By picking nettles with her bare hands she draws attention to another
dramatic act which can have different interpretations: sacrifice, but self-flagellation, purification superimposed negative emotions. This gesture of her catharsis
becomes the equivalent of giving and gives
ambiguity of the story.

The thematic connection between the individual works is a focus on the surrounding environment and the place occupied by modern, contemporary man: the role and importance of cultural heritage in today’s society.
Some of these artists use historical and religious references, biblical themes and quotations to provide a commentary on our cultural heritage; they exploit reminiscences of familiar scenes and images of the past. Others explore our recent socialist past and the significance of the numerous architectural monuments of that time—whether forming part of Bulgaria’s cultural heritage, or neglected and even destroyed.
